THE VALE FOX STORY

Bringing centuries of distilling tradition to New York’s Hudson Valley. Read More

The Vale Fox Distillery is not your typical startup venture.

Our story starts as most stories do (at least the ones we tell) over a round of drinks. The blueprint for The Vale Fox Distillery was sketched out by Eral Gokgol-Kline and his brother Arman on a cocktail napkin over a round of drinks – negronis if memory serves. Eral, who spent a decade analyzing and investing in businesses globally, is the managing principal of the distillery and the distillery is rooted in his love of single malt whiskies and gin, his deep appreciation for the power of craftsmanship, and his understanding of what makes a business successful.

Eral was introduced to single malts by his mother, an avid whisky enthusiast. But, it turns out the family’s roots in spirits run much deeper. Eral and Arman’s great, great (truly great) Dutch grandfather founded a distillery in New York State in 1651, just over an hour’s drive from where The Vale Fox Distillery is located. Whether it was an ancestral calling or simply a beautiful coincidence, Eral left behind his life investing in businesses to construct an exceptional full-scale distillery from the ground up with a team to match.

Eral recruited an all-star team of experts including:

  • Master Distiller Roselyn Thomson, formerly with John Dewar & Sons.
  • The late Dr. Jim Swan, a chemist formerly affiliated with the Scotch Whisky Research
Institute and inventor of the unique aging cases now in use at The Vale Fox Distillery.
  • Harry Cockburn, who has over 45 years of distillation experience, including at Bowmore
    Distillery.
  • Douglas Cruickshank, former Production Director at Chivas Brothers.
  • Cliff Oldfield, our sales manager, formerly with Dad’s Hat Rye.
  • Arthur Shapiro, our marketing adviser, formerly Executive Vice President of Marketing at
    Seagram.

Welcome to The Vale Fox

The opening of The Vale Fox Distillery has been a labor of love for many years, and that passion is reflected throughout our story — from the quality of our spirits, to our 120-acre grain-to-glass distillery, to our incredible team. I look forward to sharing the results with you!

A Team of World-Renowned Spirits Experts

How our products are consumed is as important to us as how they are made. So, we paid as much attention to bringing on experts in spirits consumption as we did experts in production. We recruited a team of revered cocktail professionals led by Gary (gaz) Regan, including Jeffery Morganthaler and Leo Robitschek, early on to help us develop Tod & Vixen’s Gin.

Gary (gaz) Regan is considered the guru of bartenders and drink mixology. He is the author of The Gin Compendium, The Bartender’s Bible, The Joy of Mixology, and The Negroni, among dozens of other books. Leo Robitschek and Jeffrey Morganthaler are renowned bartenders, mixologists and bar chefs. Led by gaz, and in cooperation with our Master Distiller, the team was instrumental in the creation of our Tod & Vixen’s Dry Gin 1651. They brought to bear not only their expertise but also their elbow grease. Through much trial and error, they helped us to zero in on a gin formulation that works exceedingly well in cocktails.

What’s behind the Vale Fox name?

After more than a year searching for the ideal location for a distillery, Eral discovered a beautiful 120-acre farm in LaGrange, NY. As he surveyed the first-rate topography and terroir, excited to have finally found the perfect site, he spotted a skulk (group) of foxes running towards the woods. He decided to name the distillery after them . . . The Vale (old English name for valley) Fox.
